Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children experience significant adversity in the early years, yet thrive socially, emotionally and academically. This article examines the factors that have the greatest impact on children’s outcomes. Protective factors include positive parenting practices and having a parent with a strong, positive sense of identity. Risk factors predicting high social and emotional difficulties scores include being bullied, problems with speech or understanding, and having a parent with depression.
